Bjorn, it is true that the majority of shutters in my region of the United States are either painted wood or a white vinyl, but this is strictly up to the individual. I know from my perspective, I am most blown away with stained wood as far as providing that truly custom look. A good finish on a stain is the most dramatic look for the windows. Since we deal in so much UV light and heat here in the high desert, many people choose to have a light color on their windows to reflect as much sunlight as possible. Good design is the key to make sure that all considerations are thought out.

I see that painted shutters tend to be the preference for indoor wood shutters. When is it appropriate to use stain on your shutters? I like the idea of having shutters that will never crack or peal in the summer heat.

Great article about the pluses and minuses of shades vs. blinds. Here in Austin, TX we have a similar climate to Las Vegas, and (now that energy costs have risen) more people are interested in reducing their air conditioning bills.

As you say, shades provide the best insulation potential; but we still find a lot of people who want the look of a natural wood blind or plantation shutter. It's not uncommon to provide a mix of shades and blinds -- with blinds used on view windows and shades applied on northern windows where insulation is paramount.
